Desperate Cosmetics -1979/80
Quite a mixed bag on this record. The result of having so many songs to choose from, dating back through the earliest high school days.
DC was a very DIY undertaking. I really had no idea how to even make a recording, let alone how to manufacture or sell one. Naive would be an understatement.
It would have been nice if YouTube tutorials were around in '78, but instead I had to constantly pester a few folks for advice throughout the year, on and off, of making DC. Some invaluable ones … Bill and Lynne Powell at Creative Arts, Bob and Dan at Grant Ave and songwriter/mentors David Essig, Ian Tamblyn, and Bill Garret.
It was a little intense to suddenly be in a "professional" studio like Grant Ave and being the first time in a "real" studio, I believe I probably took for granted how special it was. I could only guess, for instance, that all engineers were probably a little like Dan - balancing the technical with the inventive and always with a sense of personal involvement somehow. The atmosphere was pretty much constantly balanced and inviting. Always kind of charged. I remember.
1000 copies of Desperate Cosmetics were pressed. I clearly recall how big that stack of boxes looked when I went to pick them up and the second thoughts that day, but they were outweighed by the excitement of finally holding a single copy in hand. I sold them out of my van after shows, through mail orders and on consignment to record shops around Ontario mostly.
The master tapes disappeared somewhere along the way - I have no idea how that happened and it's a drag.
